We're stepping things up around here, starting with a bang. I’ve mapped (almost) all the refineries in the world to better understand refinery locations, measure regional imbalances, and gain insights into the future of refining.
With the recent wave of mega refineries coming online, along with closures, conversions, and prolonged maintenance, understanding where they are, who operates them, and their capacities can help answer some pressing questions.
Please note this is work in progress, I’m still missing like 3Mbpd capacity between China, Central Asia, and Africa, but at country level is pretty much there.
The goal is to start tracking maintenance, providing a clear view of total addressable demand at any given time.
For now, it’s a great way to get familiar with who’s who in the refinery world.
I know I have readers from every corner of the globe, so if you spot anything, feel free to comment below. Together, we can build the most comprehensive database possible. Don’t forget to subscribe for future dashboards—there’s more in the pipeline!
Make sure to view it properly on a desktop, have fun!
This is extremely well done. A very big effort. I love how you can drill down to country and then by operator. I am a NOWI in American Shale and now a recent NOWI in Guyana. Although I am only involved in upstream, I find this to be very useful and will be sharing it with my oil and gas friends who will also likely find it interesting and useful. Cheers.
There was only ever 1 refinery in New Zealand, it closed on 2022, now only an import facility.
